Black History portraits

Year 5

Children from Year 5 worked in collaboration with artist-in-residence Andrew Tims to create portraits of historical and contemporary figures from black history.

Black history in the broadest sense includes the contributions of black people to the development of history and civilization.  It includes the contributions of black people to the development of the arts, technology and the sciences, industry and world trade, and religion and philosophy.

The eight portraits, created using ink and pencil, and including a motivational quote they said, are as follows:

Malorie Blackman, author

Usain Bolt, athlete

Lenny Henry, comedian

Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa

Barack Obama, US president

Rosa Parks, civil rights activist

Oprah Winfrey, actress and tv presenter

Benjamin Zephaniah, poet
