Shape and Pattern

Reception

In Reception the children have been learning about shape and pattern as part of the early learning goals in Maths.

The children, working in collaboration with artist Andrew Tims, used collage to create the images – cutting shapes from painted acetate and applying them directly to canvas.

The varying sizes and colours of the individual shapes create, when placed together, exciting and intricate patterns.

Each canvas holds a collection of either triangles, circles or squares, and illustrates the children’s learning.   As part of the creative process the children have been able to:

• Understand shape and the number of faces each shape has;
• Arrange shapes into patterns;
• Develop fine motor skills when using scissors.
